— To Asta in Burn the Present into Memory

Langris Vaude 「ランギルス・ヴォード Rangirusu Vōdo[1] is a nobleman of House Vaude, a 1st Class Senior Magic Knight, and the former vice-captain of Clover Kingdom's Golden Dawn squad.[2][3] He is from Tota, a village within the Clover Kingdom.[4][5] He also is the human vessel for the elf Ratri.[6]

Langris is a young man with a small build. He has thick, brown wavy hair that is swept up at the back, but left to fall over his forehead and face in the front. Like his brother, he has large, downturned eyes and a generally amiable expression on his face most of the time.

He wears one of Golden Dawn's full uniforms with a high-collared belted top, light pants, and knee high boots. He also wears the hooded Golden Dawn mantle, with a longer knee-length cape attached. Like other knights, the insignia of his squad is on the left shoulder but he also has a smaller badge pinned next to it.

While possessed by Ratri, two tattoos appear on Langris's forehead and run down to his cheeks, passing over his eyes, and his ears become pointed.[7]

At first glance, Langris seems to have a pleasant, happy-go-lucky personality. He smiles even in the midst of battle, and possesses a great deal of confidence in his abilities. Like most nobles, this borders on arrogance.[8] He also possesses a large degree of vanity and self-importance that is characteristic of many nobles, including their disdain for those they believe are beneath them. Peasantry sticking up to him being overlooked by others clashes with his world view and fuels his rage and insecurity. He has a particular sore spot regarding his brother.

However, Langris is also very sadistic, as he tries to kill his older brother after defeating him. Despite being known as the talented brother, Langris shows a deep grudge against Finral as Finral was always praised for being kind and well-liked by others. His hatred for Finral grows after seeing others rush to his aid after Langris cut him down.[9] During his fight against Asta in the Royal Knights Selection Exam, he shows no remorse for his actions and claims that he will always be superior to others, including Finral, due to his magic.[10]

Langris appears of himself and his skill which most of his peers and family have affirmed, even Finral admits Langris is better in terms of magical skill and power, fueling Langris's ego. However, upon hearing that another is considered better than he is, Finral in particular, created such a sharp disconnect from his worldview, it created a deep schism in his personality that he could not reconcile. In every way that seemed to matter, he was considered superior, yet he felt others found a way to look down on him. Ultimately, this deep insecurity festered and became a core part of Langris's identity, developing into an inferiority complex. Langris feels his parents only love him for his vastly superior magic compared to Finral, which has also stemmed into his leadership position of the Golden Dawn. He believes if he does not beat Finral in everything, he will not be loved or cared for by his family.[11] His desire to win and be loved because of it has caused him to believe that winning ultimately makes one right, and since he has never lost, he believes (wrongly), that he is right about everything and special because of it and his talent.

His rage is dangerous and massive when provoked, with his brother's positive traits setting him off like a cannon, due to his fiancé thinking that Finral is the better brother for his good-hearted nature, as opposed to Langris who has shown to be better than Finral in every way that Langris has been told and believes he is important. He is also easily set on edge when he is mocked as when Asta berates him for injuring Finral or willing to sacrifice citizens for the sake of proving his perceived superiority. He also hates being overlooked such as when Yuno states he is going to become captain of the Golden Dawn, indicating in Langris's mind, that Yuno thought that he was not worthy of being considered competition, only feeding his inferiority complex further.

Young Langris shows off

Langris receives praise from his parents.

Langris was born into House Vaude, which has long been known for their prowess with offensive Spatial Magic. Even at a young age, Langris shows more promise than his older half-brother at this magic, and is called a genius by the rest of his family.[12] When introduced to Finesse Calmreich, the fiancée of the next head of House Vaude, Langris finds her boring. Later, he eavesdrops on her and Finral's discussion and is angered when she considers Finral to be the superior brother.[13]

Years later, he joins the Magic Knights and after becoming vice-captain of the Golden Dawn squad, Langris also becomes the next family head instead of his older half-brother.[14]

Golden Dawn in Kiten

Golden Dawn arrive in Kiten.

When the Diamond Kingdom attacks Kiten, fourteen members, including William Vangeance, Langris, and Yuno, arrive to drive the invaders back.[15][16] After seeing Yuno's display against Broccos, William suggests that he and Langris join the battle, with which Langris agrees.[17] As Yagos is absorbing the Purple Orcas, Langris approaches and uses his magic to sever a large portion of the snail, a part of Yagos himself, and accidentally a section of a building behind.[18]

After the Black Bulls encounter Yuno, Langris appears on a rooftop and proceeds to insult his brother, but when Langris insults Charmy Pappitson and Asta, Finral confronts his brother.[19] Suddenly, Langris is attacked but easily defends himself. Yagos is seeking revenge and has taken multiple citizens as hostages. Langris determines that he cannot defeat Yagos without killing the citizens and decides to sacrifice them, but Asta stops him.[20] After the Black Bulls work together to defeat Yagos, Finral challenges Langris and Golden Dawn.[21]

When the Black Bulls leave, Langris joins Yuno on the ground stating that they were a vulgar group and that Yuno should choose his friends more carefully. Yuno states that he is proud of Asta and that Asta is his rival, which causes Langris to laugh and ask for what they are competing.[22] Yuno answers that they are aiming for the title of Wizard King. Laughing, Langris says that commoners must not feel embarrassment and adds that he would expect nothing less from the peasant chosen by a four-leaf grimoire. Yuno then announces that he first plans to become the Captain of the Golden Dawn, which Langris angrily notes overlooks him, the vice-captain.[23]

After Yuno's achievements are acknowledged at the Star Awards Festival, Langris stands to the side and thinks to himself.[24] During the king's speech, Langris is surprised by the announcement of the Royal Knights Selection Exam.[25]

A week later, Langris attends the exam[26] and is placed on Team G with Sekke Bronzazza and Fragil Tormenta.[27] After listening to the other Magic Knights praise Finral's skill,[28] Langris has Sekke carry them on his Shooting Star and, once in range, easily destroys Team H's crystal and its defense, winning the match for Team G.[29]

Langris confronts Finral

Langris confronts his brother.

Afterwards, Langris approaches his brother and warns him to be careful in their next match as their parents and Finesse would be sad if Finral were killed by Langris's magic, but Finral claims that he will beat Langris so that will not happen, which Langris finds amusing.[30]

During their second match, Langris again rides around on Sekke's scooter. When they locate Team E, Langris attacks the crystal but Finral blocks it with his own Spatial Magic.[31] Langris issues a barrage of attacks for Finral to block and questions if Finral can keep up. Finral releases a slow-moving spell, which Sekke scoots around. To Langris's surprise, the spell changes direction and Langris jumps off the scooter and watches as Sekke is warped away.[32]

Langris attacks Finral

Langris attacks his defeated brother.

Finral declares that he does not wish to hurt Langris, who is disgusted by Finral's concern. The Golden Dawn then opens his grimoire and reveals his own spell, creating multiple floating orbs and releasing a sinister feeling mana.[33][34] Finral creates a matching array of orbs, and the brothers launch their spells at each other, resulting in multiple explosions. Langris outmatches his brother and his spell destroys Team E's crystal, winning the match for Team G, and carves out several chunks from Finral's body.[35] Langris approaches his brother and remembers everything that Finral does that infuriates him. He then prepares to kill his defenseless brother, but he is stopped by Asta, Magna, and Luck. Julius Novachrono reprimands the vice-captain for being willing to kill his fellow Magic Knight.

When Asta accuses Langris of not being a true Magic Knight, Langris asks Julius for permission to deal with the Black Bulls, but he attacks before receiving a response. Asta slices through the spell with the Demon-Slayer Sword, which further angers Langris, and Julius decides to let them fight it out.[36] Before they can clash, Julius freezes Asta and Langris in time and prepares the battlefield.[37]

After Teams B and G are assembled, Julius explains the rules and releases Langris and Asta. Fragil and Sekke offer their assistance, but Langris refuses and decides to fight on his own.[38] He tries to attack Team B's crystal, but Asta nullifies it with the Demon-Dweller Sword. Team B organize around their crystal, and Langris flanks them and unleashes a barrage, and as he continues his attack, it overwhelms Asta, damaging him and the crystal, and Mimosa Vermillion's attempts to heal the injuries.[39][40]

Asta defeats Langris

Asta defeats Langris and destroys the crystal.

When Zora Ideale interferes, Langris bends his spells around Zora's magic circle. However, when they strike Zora, they activate a magic circle on his body and are reflected back.[41] Langris cancels out the spells with another barrage and, after mocking Zora and Finral, attacks again, but Asta appears in his Black Asta form and nullifies the Spatial Magic.[42] Langris demands that Asta cower, before attacking again. Asta flies at Langris, slamming his sword into the vice-captain's stomach. Langris is surprised to find that he cannot use his magic, while Asta pushes him into Team G's crystal and destroys it with Black Meteorite.[43] At the same time, Team B's crystal shatters, ending the match in a draw. Langris then falls to the ground and lies there unconscious.[44]

Three mages attend to his healing[45] and, after the exam is completed, take him to the Royal Capital for questioning into his connection with the Eye of the Midnight Sun.[46]

Several days later, Langris is possessed by Ratri.[6] Later that night, all the remaining elves are exorcised after William and Licht combine their magic to connect the elves to a giant tree through which Asta sends Anti Magic.[47]

Langris calls Finral cursed

Langris calls out Finral's womanizing behavior.

Several days later in the Golden Dawn base, Langris is resting in bed while Finesse recounts Finral's actions to save him. They are interrupted by the arrival of Finral. Langris acknowledges his irresponsible actions and shame but refuses to give up. Happy to hear this, Finral declares that he will work hard to become the next head of House Vaude and win Finesse's hand. Langris then asks to talk with his brother in the hall. Langris begins to explain why Finral will not be able to make Finesse happy, but they are interrupted by Letoile Becquerel and another Golden Dawn. When Finral flirts with both women, Langris criticizes Finral's bad habits with women. Langris walks away and tells himself that he will not make it easy for Finral.[48]

Six months later, after the attack on the Golden Dawn base, Langris watches Yuno train for the Spade Kingdom mission and offers to help Yuno test his strategy for fighting Spatial Magic.[50] The next morning, Langris, Yuno, and the other Magic Knights selected for the Spade Kingdom invasion gather at the Magic Knights Headquarters.[51] After infiltrating the castle,[52] Langris, Yuno, and Nozel split off to face Zenon Zogratis. Nozel trails behind to handle the Dark Disciples along the way, while Langris and Yuno continue on to fight Zenon.[53] Langris tells Zenon he cannot let a guy like him continue to be on the loose. He uses Archangel Shootdown which Zenon easily blocks with his own Spatial Magic. Zenon says if he was not alive that he could have been the ultimate Spatial mage. Hearing those words, Langris says it has been a while since someone talked down on him. Using Archangel Destruction, he launches a ball of Spatial magic at Zenon. However, Spatial Mana Domination cancels out Langris magic. Zenon taunts them on how he will kill them without moving an inch. At this moment, Yuno uses Spirit of Boreas and strikes Zenon which Langris smiles at.[54]

Langris distracts Zenon

Langris distracts Zenon while Yuno charges magic power.

After Yuno asks Langris to distract Zenon for three minutes,[55] Langris uses Mana Zone to raise around himself a spatial barrier capable of erasing Zenon's magic. While reflecting on Yuno's leadership within the squad, Langris acknowledges Yuno as the vice-captain. Zenon's bones eventually penetrate the barrier and pierces Langris's body. However, Langris refuses to give up and charges at Zenon, while espousing the greatness of the Golden Dawn. Yuno then finishes his Spirit of Euros and takes aim at Zenon.[56] Yuno looses the arrow, which punches a hole through Zenon's sternum.[57]

Zenon drops Langris and collapses to the floor; however, because the arrow missed Zenon's heart in order to avoid injuring Langris, Zenon survives long enough to make a new deal with Beelzebub, transforming himself into a devil. After Zenon overwhelms and defeats Yuno, Langris stands back up and raises his Mana Zone. When Zenon attacks Langris, Finral arrives, to Langris's surprise, and warps his brother and himself to safety. Zenon traps them in a smaller spatial cube and attempts to skewer them with bones, but Langris's Mana Zone enables Finral to warp them both behind Zenon. The brothers then prepare to continue fighting Zenon together.[58] The brothers warp around the chamber, avoiding Zenon's bone whips. They get in close behind Zenon, and Langris carves through Zenon's torso. Unfortunately, Langris's offensive Spatial Magic cannot erase a devil's heart, so Zenon survives and defeats Langris and Finral.[59]

After Yuno receives a new grimoire, he uses his new Star Magic to fight Zenon. He creates a Heavenly Wind Ark to lift and carry off Finral and Langris to a healing mage. Langris questions what Yuno is, to which Yuno simply responds that he is the vice-captain of the Golden Dawn.[60] When Langris and Finral reach the group from the Heart Kingdom, Secre Swallowtail heals their injuries.[61]

Later, the Black Bulls' base smashes through the castle walls to the ritual chamber, and Langris follows after them and shouts for his captain.[62] However, they are interrupted by the second gate's opening. Lucifero combines the bodies of all the devils into one giant, monstrous form. After Asta cuts the monster in two, destroying the coffins holding William and Yami, Patolli flies up to catch William, which slightly irritates Langris.[63] Shortly after, Lucifero manifests his body from the monster's remains and increases gravity in the surrounding area. Langris uses his Mana Zone to protect William and Patolli from the gravity, while the elf flies them over to the remnants of the Black Bull base so that William can give Yami a Mistilteinn Blade, with which to fight Lucifero.[64]

After Asta defeats Lucifero, Langris rushes over to where Yami and Nacht are dying from the holes in their torsos.[65] He then witnesses Rouge pull the other Black Bulls out of the rubble so Charmy can restore Mimosa's magic power. Mimosa then uses her Ultimate Magic, Flower Princess Utopia, to fully heal Yami and Nacht.[66]

Battle Prowess[]

  • Spatial Magic: Langris uses this rare magic attribute to manipulate space. With his rare offensive Spatial Magic, Langris is capable of teleporting anything, including magic, out of existence.[12] Zenon Zogratis appraises Langris as the second best spatial mage.[67]

  • Large Magic Power: As a nobleman and the former vice-captain of the Golden Dawn squad, Langris possesses a large amount of magic power.[69] He easily defeats one of the Diamond Kingdom's Eight Shining Generals,[70] and he can quickly summon enough power to match his own doubled spell.[71] After being freed from Ratri's possession, Langris retains some of the elf's magic.[72]
