Charlotte Roselei 「シャーロット・ローズレイ Shārotto Rōzurei」[3] is a noblewoman of House Roselei[5] and the captain of the Clover Kingdom's Blue Rose squad of the Magic Knights.[1] She also is the human host for the elf Charla.[6]
Appearance[]
Charlotte is a tall woman with upper-back length blonde hair that is braided as she usually keeps her hair tied back into a bun with only a single lone braid hanging down on the left side of her face while she has bangs swept to the left side, light blue eyes with visible long eyelashes and full pink lips. Her beauty is renowned throughout the Clover Kingdom and she is rated as the most beautiful woman—when not wearing her helmet.[7]
Charlotte's usual attire is a set of armor. She wears a fancy decorated helmet that has a single fin protruding from the top, resembling a shark fin. For her top, she wears a black one piece undershirt, which extends out to her hands and act as sleeveless gloves. On top of that, she wears a decorated armored breastplate, an armored collar plate, as well as gauntlets on her arms. For her bottom, she wears a short blue skirt, which is visible underneath a longer leather-like skirt that is open on the front. Her white trousers are tucked into her thigh-high black socks, which have leather cuffs at the ends. She wears shin armor as well as armored boots. Her grimoire is stored inside a brown leather pouch that is attached to a strap on her waist on her right side. She finishes off her look with a long, flowing blue cape that reaches down to her ankles, along with the Blue Rose robe, secured at the center of her chest with a buckle that shows their squad's insignia.
Six months after the elves' attack, Charlotte wears a similar shirt but it extends down below her waist, in place of her skirt. She also wears fewer pieces of armor, only keeping her helmet and breastplate, which are decorated with designs similar to Charla's tattoos. Her squad robe has a second, darker collar that is lined with fur, and a larger, rose-shaped pin holds it together in the front.[8]
Before she became captain, her attire is similar to what she currently wears, minus the armored pieces such as the breastplate, collar plate, gauntlets, shin armor, and helmet.
On rare occasions, she is seen wearing a formal dress.
While possessed by Charla, two tattoos appear on Charlotte's cheeks and her ears become pointed.[6]

Personality[]
Charlotte appears as a quiet, cold and indifferent woman who keeps her emotions controlled and well hidden. She is constantly shown to appear as a rather stern woman, despite inwardly having an inward monologue that constantly appears to say calm down, especially around Yami Sukehiro. She often does not respond to situations that go out of hand, preferring to appear indifferent and let things play out. She does respond well to emergencies and pressing concerns, performing her duties and moving swiftly to take care of any problems that come up. However, she still is capable of losing her composure and becoming annoyed, which almost always involves Yami teasing of her. She is also a lightweight when it comes to alcohol, barely able to finish a pint before becoming drunk.
Charlotte considers her duty to the kingdom to be her foremost responsibility, with little interest in the social aspects of life. Her beauty is quite noticeable when she chooses to show it, but she is more comfortable in plate mail than silk dresses and cares little for the opinions of most others. She also has a hard time being open with most people and expressing herself on occasion. That said, she often quips back at her fellow captains when they make rash decisions or do something she considers stupid, particularly Yami. However, she also has admiration for those who are competent and work hard, though she rarely ever shows it. Outwardly, she displays little interest in finding a husband and becomes angry when the subject is brought up, for which Yami repeatedly teases her and calls her "Spiny Prickly Queen."
Notably, the culture of apparent misandry within the Blue Rose squad likely originates from her though it is not known why she dislikes men to such a degree. However, she is secretly in love with Yami, despite always treating him harshly.[9] When she revealed this to her squad, many of her subordinates confessed to wanting to help her win Yami's affection, and some said they also had relationships they kept secret, which startled her greatly. According to her subordinate Sol Marron, Charlotte does have a large amount of respect for Julius Novachrono.
Biography[]
Charlotte was born into House Roselei.[5] As a child, she was cursed so that on her eighteenth birthday, she and her family will be trapped in a cage of time, unless her heart is stolen by a man. Charlotte resolves to become strong enough to break the curse herself and later joins the Blue Rose squad. However, she fails to break the curse in time, so Charlotte's magic begins to overflow uncontrollably throughout the city, devouring homes and people with its briars. Charlotte tries to deactivate her magic but fails and as Charlotte surrenders to the overflowing magic, Yami Sukehiro cuts through the briars and chastises her for relying only on herself. At that point, Charlotte falls in love with Yami, effectively having her heart stolen, which stops the curse but does not remove it.[10]
Nine years later, after defeating a foreign invasion, Charlotte returns to the Royal Capital with Julius Novachrono and some other captains of the Magic Knights. They are welcomed with joy and cheers from the Noble Region's citizens.[11]
Several months later, she attends the Magic Knights Entrance Exam[12] and afterwards requests Yuno and passes on Asta to join her squad.[13]
When Sol Marron is invited as one of the honorary Magic Knights to a War Merits Conferment Ceremony, Charlotte accompanies her subordinate.[14] At the end of the ceremony, Charlotte attends the celebratory banquet that Julius had prepared for the guests of the ceremony.[15] Sol finds it amusing when some of the other knights begin fighting, but Charlotte reprimands her for such behavior.[16] Sol laughs again when Asta and Leopold Vermillion rush out to defend the Royal Capital, and this time Charlotte agrees.[17]
Fuegoleon Vermillion orders the Blue Roses to the east, and Sol creates an earthen golem to carry her and Charlotte.[18] Once there, they are surrounded by corpses, which disgust the women, but they resolve to destroy the corpses anyway.[19] Charlotte destroys several of the corpses with Corpse-Hunting Briar Trees.[20]
Once all the corpses are defeated, Valtos teleports the Magic Knight squads to location hundreds of miles from the city.[21] Combining their magic, the Magic Knights quickly return to the city and come to the rescue of Leopold, Asta, and Noelle Silva.[22]
After the Eye of the Midnight Sun members escape with the kidnapped Asta, Charlotte watches Mimosa Vermillion try to save Fuegoleon and later helps the others restore the capital.[23] Later when Julius returns with George and Asta,[24] Charlotte reports on what the enemy objective was. After everything, Charlotte and Sol return to their headquarters, promising to become stronger.[25]
In a cave outside of Nairn, Charlotte, Nozel Silva, and Jack the Ripper arrive to save Yami from the combined attack of Rhya, Vetto, and Fana.[26] She squares off against Rhya, who promises to take her to a bar should he win.[27] Like the others Charlotte is surprised when Asta makes it through the battlefield unscathed and lands a hit on Licht.[28]
Not to be shown up, Charlotte declares that it should be the captains who finish off the Eye of the Midnight Sun.[29] However, when Patolli's mana starts overflowing, she realizes the danger that they are in.[30] The captains stare in stunned silence as the Third Eye seal Patolli's mana and retreat, and Charlotte realizes that they were outclassed.[31]
At Julius' request, Charlotte attends a meeting of the captains. She questions why William Vangeance is arriving late, which William dismisses. As the captains get impatient and worry that Julius forgot about them, Marx Francois contacts them and requests that they come down to the dungeon.[32] There, the captives Catherine and George reveal that Gueldre Poizot is the traitor. Gueldre denies this accusation and tries to escape with his Permeation Magic. As the captains fight Gueldre's Invisible Soldiers, Charlotte declares that he cannot be allowed to flee because of how strong his magic is.[33] After Asta dispels Gueldre's magic, Rill Boismortier quickly ends the fight since the other captains' magic threatened to destroy the building.[34] Charlotte then denounces Gueldre as a coward and as a traitor.[35]
The captains watch as Marx displays Gueldre's memories. Julius demands that they keep the incident a secret and investigate their own squads, before they go their separate ways.[36]
At Julius' request,[37] Charlotte attends the Star Awards Festival. Before the ceremony, Charlotte is sitting and draws the attention of Balman, who decides to make her his partner for the night. When she ignores him, he grabs her arm and asks if she knows who he is, and she then restrains him and his attendants with Briar Magic and asks if he knows who she is.[38] She chastises Balman, while Sol cheers her on.[39]
Sol forces Charlotte into a dress she found, and when the people nearby compliment her, Charlotte and Sol threaten them. Charlotte thinks to herself that she cannot allow the other captains to see her like this, when Yami arrives and greets her. She struggles to keep her composure in his company. Vanessa Enoteca calls out to Yami, and when she and Charlotte see each other, they become envious of the other, so Vanessa challenges her to a drinking contest. Charlotte begins to refuse but Sol accepts for her captain. Charlotte is surprised when Vanessa passes out from one drink, and when she cannot finish one drink, Yami finishes it for her. She blushes and then passes out.[40]
As the ceremony begins, Sol tries to wake her captain [41] and Julius wonders why Charlotte is not onstage.[37] After the ceremony, Charlotte changes into her uniform and accompanies Yami to meet the other captains.[42] Mereoleona Vermillion shows up and grabs Yami, and Charlotte thinks it is appropriate for him, when she herself is grabbed. They are then carried to Ultime-Volcano Mountain Trail to train with the Crimson Lion squad.[43]
Having sobered, Charlotte heads out first with Yami and uses her Briar Magic to dodge the falling lava.[44] After reaching the summit, Charlotte stands next to Yami and witnesses Mereoleona evade and punch Asta midair.[45]
Charlotte joins the other women in the hot spring. When Mereoleona offers her sake, Charlotte refuses, not wanting to be both naked and drunk. After thinking about Yami being naked in the other bath, Charlotte blushes and faints, so Sol pulls her out of the water and tries to cool her off.[46]
Several days after the Royal Knights Selection Exam, Charlotte is drinking tea when she receives an alert from Marx Francois that Julius is fighting Patolli.[47] Later that night, she is possessed by Charla and travels to the Royal Capital, where she confronts Yami.[48]
Later that night, all the remaining elves are exorcised after William and Licht combine their magic to connect the elves to a giant tree through which Asta sends Anti Magic.[49] As Charla's spirit departs, Charlotte collapses into Yami's arms.[50]
A few days later, Charlotte is resting in bed and Sol is sitting at her bedside. Sol admits that Yami helped save Charlotte, which confirms Charlotte's memories of when she was possessed. Charlotte is so wrapped up in her thoughts that she does not notice when Yami Sukehiro arrives. She panics and hopes that Sol will kick him out, but Sol allows him to stay since he helped them. Yami then asks about something she said when she was possessed. Worried that it has to do with her feelings for him, Charlotte yells and runs out of the room before he can finish his question. She runs through the town, through buildings, and across a river.[51] She eventually stops and sits on a rooftop. After some thought, she resolves to admit the truth and returns to the Blue Rose base.[52]
She gathers some of the Blue Roses in the courtyard and tells them that she loves Yami. She is surprised when they voice support of her romance and urge her to tell him, which she agrees to do. However, when Yami suddenly appears, she is too nervous. Yami believes her inner turmoil means that she hates him, but Asta explains that it means she trusts Yami more than she can admit. Charlotte apologizes to Asta for his exile due to her failure and then asks Yami to dinner so they can discuss his question.[53]
At dinner, Charlotte and Yami discuss her curse and curses in general. She mentions that Noelle is also affected by a curse.[54]
Charlotte travels to the Heart Kingdom in order to train with the Spirit Guardians. After learning Mana Method from Potrof and Sarado, Charlotte returns to the Clover Kingdom and practices the magic technique while continuing her captain duties.[55]
Six months later, after the Golden Dawn's and Black Bull's bases are attacked and their captains are abducted, the remaining captains gather for a meeting and are briefed on the Dark Triad's plot. Charlotte criticizes Yami and William for being careless and pathetic, but internally, she frets over Yami's well-being. She threatens Rill when he suggests that Yami and William may already be dead. When Jack, Charlotte, and Nozel begin bickering, Fuegoleon tells them to control themselves, but they are all interrupted by the sudden arrival of Nacht Faust and Asta.[56] Charlotte and three other captains stand to attack the strange intruder, but Nacht summons four masked creatures to hold them. After Julius vouches for Nacht's identity as the Black Bull's vice-captain and a spy in the Spade Kingdom, the captains stand down and listen as Nacht explains the Tree of Qliphoth's ritual and structure. Afterward, Nacht expresses his desire to build a team around Asta and his Anti Magic in order to rescue Yami and William and to destroy the Tree of Qliphoth.[57] After Nacht announces that the team will leave on the morning of the third day, the meeting is adjourned and Fuegoleon suggests requesting help from the Heart Kingdom. However, Charlotte reveals that they have been unable to contact the Heart Kingdom, and Nacht supposes that Vanica Zogratis may have attacked the kingdom.[58]
Charlotte and Rill stand next to Julius as he contacts Gadjah, who reports on the status of the Heart Kingdom and the Magic Knights there. Afterward, Charlotte is determined to save Yami.[59]
Three days later, Charlotte and the other Magic Knights selected for the Spade Kingdom invasion gather at the Magic Knights Headquarters.[60] After infiltrating the castle,[61] Charlotte, Rill, and Dorothy split off to face Vanica Zogratis. Dorothy trails behind to handle the Dark Disciples along the way, while Charlotte and Rill continue on to fight Vanica.[62] Charlotte attacks the two curse-enhanced Shining Generals under Vanica's command, but when the generals' combined counterattack burns away Charlotte's briars, Rill paints two spells to extinguish the flames. Vanica is unimpressed with the captains' magic attributes and then disparages Yami for losing to Zenon, which angers Charlotte. Using the water and dirt leftover from Rill's magic, Charlotte grows briars to cover the floor and walls and wrap around the two generals, weakening the curse that is enhancing them. Megicula is fascinated that Charlotte is able to modify her curse into an anti-curse magic. Charlotte uses True Briar Magic to knock aside the two generals and then combines the red roses with her blue roses. Ecstatic to find a worthy opponent, Vanica draws on Megicula's power and challenges Charlotte, but the captain refuses and instead restrains Vanica in a tangle of briars.[63]
Shortly after, Charlotte senses the Tree of Qliphoth's rapid growth[64] and Vanica's growing power as she draws on 100% of her devil's power. Vanica breaks free of the restraints and excitedly rushes to attack Charlotte, who defends with her briars but still gets her helmet knocked off her head.[65] The captains continue evading Vanica's blood spikes, so she pulls out Lolopechka who is under Vanica's control. When Lolopechka attacks, Charlotte reinforces Rill's Souterrain Giant, but the Water Magic blasts apart the painting, knocking Rill aside. Charlotte then swears to break Lolopechka free from the possession. While Charlotte is preoccupied, Vanica impales the captain with spikes from below. Vanica rushes to finish off the captain, but Noelle and Gadjah arrive, with Noelle forcing Vanica back.[66] When Noelle reveals that she is Undine's host, Charlotte is confused why the spirit is not with Lolopechka.[67] Charlotte and Rill watch in amazement as Noelle's Saint Valkyrie Dress easily handles Vanica's magic.[68]
After Noelle defeats Vanica, Charlotte watches in horror as Megicula partially manifests itself from Vanica's body and the devil's magic power withers Charlotte's anti-curse roses.[69] After Megicula destroys Noelle's Sea Dragon's Roar, Charlotte spreads out more briars so as to weaken the devil's curse power. Rill paints Twilight of Valhalla over himself and Charlotte, but Megicula forces Vanica's body to create curse-laced blood spikes, destroying the structure and Charlotte's briars and pinning down both captains.[70]
After Asta stops Lolopechka from exploding, Megicula decides to sacrifice both Lolopechka and Vanica immediately. At the same time, Twilight of Valhalla's secondary effects activate, revitalizing Charlotte and Rill and increasing their magic power. Charlotte then regrows her Blue Rose Paradise, stopping the curse runes from killing Lolopechka and Vanica. Megicula reanimates a hundred Dark Disciples, imparts them with devil power, Blood Magic, and Steel Magic, and sends them to attack the two captains.[71] When Noelle is confronted by several Disciples, Charlotte creates a Scarlet-Braided Beautiful Battle Spear to help combat them. In response, Megicula merges several Disciples to create giant soldiers capable of withstanding the captains' attacks. When Luck in his Lightning Battle Fiend form arrives, Rill revives Gadjah so the two lightning mages can charge through the Disciples and destroy the devil's body, exposing its heart. Charlotte and the others watch in shock when Megicula manages to stop Noelle's sword from striking.[72] Charlotte then watches in surprise as Nozel arrives to protect his sister and to kill the devil.[73]
After Nozel and Noelle destroy the devil's heart, Rill's spell fades so Charlotte, Rill, and Gadjah collapse from their injuries. Lolopechka attempts to heal them but to no avail. Nacht brings Mimosa to them, and she uses her Ultimate Magic, Flower Princess Utopia, to completely heal the three.[74] They later watch as Zenon's tower crumbles, and Nacht announces that the Dark Triad have all been defeated but that the Ritual is still continuing.[75] Shortly after, the second gate to the underworld opens and Lucifero partially manifests through the combined bodies of the lower-ranked devils. As the monstrous form bursts out of the castle, the Black Bull base recombines with remanants of the castle in order to fight the monster.[76] After Asta slices the monster and destroys the Qliphoth Advent Ritual, Charlotte and most of the other captains meet up and relax over their victory, and Charlotte is delighted to see Yami was saved. However, Lucifero compresses the monster's remains into a body, through which he manifests in a half-complete form. He then forces the humans to prostrate themselves before him.[77]
Asta attempts to fight Lucifero, but once Asta is sent crashing into the ground, the captains rally around him and prepare to fight Lucifero.[78] During the fight, Charlotte attacks with her briars, but Lucifero grabs them and slams her into the ground. Despite their injuries, Charlotte and the other captains refuse to give up.[79] Asta manages to cut off the tip of one of Lucifero's horns, which infuriates the devil. When Dorothy pulls Asta out from under Lucifero, Charlotte wraps the injured Black Bull in briars and moves him away from Lucifero. She also launches a Scarlet-Braided Beautiful Battle Spear, but it is stopped by Lucifero's hand. The devil then barges through and knocks aside Charlotte and Dorothy in his pursuit of Asta.[80]
After Asta defeats Lucifero, Charlotte stumbles over to Yami, who is dying from the hole in his torso. She begs for him to wake up and confesses out loud her love for him. Hearing this, Rouge pulls the Black Bulls out of the rubble of their base, and Charmy Pappitson force feeds Mimosa some of her Master Chef's food. With her magic power restored, Mimosa saves Yami and Nacht. Yami thanks Charlotte for keeping him alive with her shouting but asks what she was saying. Flustered, Charlotte passes out without answering.[81]
A year and three months later, Charlotte and the other Captains attend a special awards ceremony for Asta.[82] During the banquet afterward, Charlotte, who is unable to look at and talk to Yami, briskly walks away when he tries to talk to her and Jack.[83] Shortly after, Lucius Zogratis stops time for most of the tower, including the captains.[84] After Asta and Liebe negate the spell,[85] their fight with Lucius takes them further into the city. The captains chase after but are too late to stop Lucius from grievously injuring Asta and teleporting him away, and the Magic Knights watch as Lucius and Lily Aquaria escape.[86]
The captains return to the ceremonial hall for a meeting. Once Yuno arrives, the captains hear a recount of the events from Secre Swallowtail, Noelle, and Mimosa, as well as Nacht's report that he cannot locate Asta's shadow. Yuno also recounts the unusual circumstances of his recent mission to investigate devil activity. The captains discuss all of the revelations, and Yuno declares that he will defeat Lucius and become the Wizard King.[87]
On Judgment Day as all the captains are waiting for Lucius Zogratis, William says how the people have been evacuated and all the neighboring kingdoms have been warned about the following evil. Charlotte talks to Yami, apologizing for avoiding him and says that she will set all that aside. Yami then says to get drinks after the battle, wanting to talk about something.[88]

Magic[]
- Briar Magic: Charlotte uses this magic attribute to generate and manipulate briars.[20] Due to a curse placed on her as a child, her blue roses are weaker than their original red form. These effects remain even though Yami stopped the curse's progression.[89] After six months of training with Mana Method, Charlotte develops the ability to modify her blue roses' curse, turning it into an anti-curse magic.[90]
- True Briar Magic: Charlotte uses the Heart Kingdom's magic technique and natural mana to grow and manipulate large amounts of real briar vines to use in battle. Since these briars are made from natural mana, their roses are red and not hindered by her curse.[91]
- Creation Magic: Charlotte uses this form of magic to create objects made out of briars.[20]
- Reinforcement Magic: Charlotte uses this form of magic to increase her physical abilities.[92]
