The Boy's Vow 「少年の誓い Shōnen no Chikai」 is the 1st Page of Yūki Tabata's Black Clover.

Asta and Yuno are orphans from Hage, a village in the country-side of the Clover Kingdom. The moment both of them received their grimoires, the race is started on who will become the next Magic Emperor. Who will it be? Yuno with his four-leaf clover grimoire, which is similar as the one received by the first Emperor or Asta with his five-leaf clover grimoire where the Devil resides.

Summary

It has been quite a long time since a certain mage defeated the demon that was attacking humankind. That mage was, later on, known as the Magic Emperor. Many generations later, the Magic Emperor becomes a title bestowed to a mage elected by the people with a duty to protect the Kingdom from any harm.[1]

Asta is a young orphan boy who lives in a church with a dream to become the next Magic Emperor. Unfortunately, many people around him doubted that it would come true because Asta has a lack of magic power. Subsequently, he is being compared to Yuno who possesses an extraordinary amount of magic power and the talent to manipulate it. Determined to prove his worth, Asta leaves to train his body to compensate his lack of magical talent.[2]

That March, around the time when the firefly dandelion fluffs float around, a ceremony that awards all youngsters of 15 years old with grimoires is held. The ceremony awards nothing to Asta while Yuno receives a grimoire that has a four-leaf clover on the cover, which is similar to the grimoire that the first Magic Emperor received at his ceremony. At that moment, Yuno declares that he will become the next Magic Emperor while ignoring Asta's declaration of rivalry.[3]

In the evening, as Asta is still left shaken from the ceremony, Yuno is confronted by Revchi Salik. He reveals that he is a former member of the Magic Knights turned thief while taking possession of Yuno's grimoire. Asta comes to his friend's aide but is unable to hold his ground against Revchi who is armed with a grimoire. As Revchi tries to bring down Asta's morale, Yuno reveals that his friend is also his rival who gives him courage since Asta saved him from a thug when they were young. After hearing Yuno's true feelings, Asta regains his determination and, at the same time, a grimoire comes to him. From the tattered grimoire, Asta uses a sword covered in dirt and defeats Revchi. At the end, Yuno accepts Asta's declaration of rivalry while remembering the promise that they made in the past about becoming the Magic Emperor.[4]
