— To himself in The Boy's Vow

Asta 「アスタ Asuta[1] is an orphan left under the care of a church in the village of Hage.[2] He is the wielder of a five-leaf clover grimoire[3] and is a 3rd Class Junior Magic Knight[4] of the Clover Kingdom's Black Bull[5] and Royal Knights squads.[6]

Appearance

Asta is a young man of short stature with an exceptionally muscular build. He has green eyes and messy, ash blond hair with a single strand protruding upwards from the center of his head. He keeps his hair together with a black headband, which has the gold-colored Black Bull insignia and has a red-colored four-pointed star with three stitches on the back of it.

Asta's common outfit consists of a plain-white tunic with a V-shaped collar underneath a dark blue jacket whose sleeves extend only up to his elbows. He sports a pair of matching shorts which has a stitch marks on the left side. His pants also extends just below his knees. His shoes is made out of two different cloths, the parts covering his ankles, the soles the same color as his jacket and pants. The parts covering his toes are white, a vertical stitch mark going from the bridge to his toes.

After receiving his grimoire, Asta wears a pouch strapped to a brown leather belt. Additionally, as a member of Black Bull, he wears his squad's signature robe, which is black and short with gold trimming and covers the upper half of his torso. It also has a hood and a gold-colored button located at the right-hand side to hold it together, while the left-hand side displays the squad's insignia.

In his Black Asta form, his right arm is covered in black Anti Magic, a black wing sprouts from his right shoulder, a black horn sprouts from the right side of his head, his upper right canine tooth elongates, and his right eye turns red with the pupil becoming slit-like.[7] As he draws on more Anti Magic, more of his body is covered, additional horns form on his head, his lower right canine tooth elongates,[8] his right hand and foot transform into claws, a smaller wing sprouts from his left shoulder, and a tail grows from his back.[9]

After six months of training in the Heart Kingdom, Asta has become more muscular. Additionally, he wears a black, tight-fitting black shirt that covers his shoulders, upper arms, and some of his chest. It is open in the middle and has a gold clover on the right side. Over this, he wears a modified version of his squad's signature robe draped over his left shoulder and attached by a red cord that wraps around his neck. His headband has three red-colored, four-pointed stars on the front right side and the Black Bull insignia on the left. He also wears a pair of black, high-waisted pants that are tucked into knee-high boots and a large, brown, double-pronged belt, from which hangs his grimoire pouch.[10]

Personality

Asta shouting at Noelle

Asta's explosive nature

Asta generally is cheerful and hyperactive.[11] He tends to shout to express his thoughts and goals, much to the annoyance of some of those around him, and often in spite of other people's opinions. One of the first examples of this is when he conveyed his goal of becoming a Magic Emperor during the Magic Knights entrance exam, and told other people who jeered at him to be quiet.[12] Asta's simple yet outgoing personality is frequently played to comedic effect during more serious situations. However, his strong tenacity interests Yami Sukehiro enough to recruit him into his ranks,[13] and his determination also leads him to possess an indomitable will. Asta's determination to never give up, added with his own steel fortitude during grueling or harsh battles, is a trait that becomes the basis for others to acknowledge him, such as Magna Swing.[14] However, Asta has shown to have struggled accepting his lack of magic, using his boisterous attitude as a front to hide his insecurity. After having his arms broken and cursed by Vetto, Asta nearly slips into a depression before talking and forcing himself to continue pushing onward.

Because of his upbringing at the Forsaken region, Asta frequently receives cruel opinions and insults from almost everyone he meets. To counteract this, Asta appears to have developed a slightly sarcastic nature as he tries to defend himself.[15][16] The regularity at which he's exposed to such degrading remarks is such that he now has a certain immunity to them, shown when he easily brushes them off without getting overly annoyed.[17] However, Asta can still become irritated when others deeply insult his comrades; he will not hesitate to confront them as he tries to defend his friends.[18]

Origin of Asta and Noelle bond

Asta accepts Noelle as his comrade.

Asta also has a very strong sense of justice, which is shown during his fight against Heath Grice, as he believes that everyone deserves to be protected.[19] It is also not limited to only his comrades but his enemies as well, as noted when he asks his fellow squadmates to take the unconscious Mars along with them while the dungeon is collapsing. He argues that their mission is only to explore a dungeon as they are not ordered to kill any enemies.[20] Therefore, Asta seems to see the positive side of everyone and never takes an insult too seriously, as seen when he still befriends both Yuno and Noelle Silva even after both had openly looked down on him.[21][22] Even when Fana is trying to kill him and his allies with all her power, he attempts to reason with her as a means to understand and talk her down from her rage, showing consideration for nonviolent methods of solving conflict. He later continues to do this with the reincarnated elves, despite no success among repeated attempts.

However, Asta also believes that those that have done wrong should work to actively make up for their wrongdoings. He always holds his enemies accountable for their misdeeds, regardless if he's forgiven them or not. First shown when he requests Neige spend time in prison before promising to become his friend, Asta later demands that the weakened Ladros apologize to and help all the people he's harmed. In another example, he puts Rades into a submission hold during their next meeting, nearly breaking his arm until the latter successfully convinces him that he'll use his powers to help the people in the capital rather than for revenge.

His open, friendly, and non-judgmental attitude, indomitable will, and stubbornness has earned him the respect of almost everyone he meets, even nobles such as Klaus and Fuegoleon Vermillion. It has also earned him the affection of numerous girls, though his love for Sister Lily, combined with his somewhat dense personality, has made him largely oblivious of this fact. This love for Lily and obliviousness also make him somewhat chivalrous and non perverted as he absolutely refused to try to peek on the girls while bathing at the hotspring.

While an immensely endearing and honest person, who can win over people with his tenacity, Asta is also quite stupid. Noelle often calls him Stupidsta when she tries to suppress her feelings for him, but the saying is ultimately true. He stereotypically embodies a muscle head with little to no brains, despite his small stature. His constant blurting out of things with little to no tact or care for the situation at hand, and his blind trust of people in the kingdom despite evidence to the contrary has made him very easy to fool, depending on the situation. His trusting, truthful nature has been taken advantage of by the courts and he nearly spoke his guilt without thinking of the consequences while he was on trial. He is also very ignorant about many things in the kingdom and on its functions that magic knights should know with most of his squadmates incredulous that he doesn't know so many simple things.

Battle Prowess

Magic

Abilities

  • Expert Swordsman: Asta initially has a rough style due to having an unconventional sword and having only received basic training from Fanzell Kruger.[26][27] Over time he develops greater skill through battle experience, additional swords, and ki-sensing.[28]
  • No Magic Power: Asta possesses no mana and so is unable to use magic.[29] This enables Asta to wield Anti Magic without suffering the weakening effects since he has no magic to drain.[30] This also makes him undetectable to mana-sensors,[31] and immune to the life-draining substance of the underworld.[32]
  • Enhanced Strength: Asta possesses a high level of physical strength, able to do a thousand single-handed handstand push-ups,[33] to swing heavy swords single-handedly,[34] and to punch holes in rock walls with no injury to himself.[35] Asta can swing his swords with such force that his opponents break stone when they crash.[36][37] The Witch Queen further enhances his arm strength using Blood Magic.[38]
  • Enhanced Speed: Asta is capable of moving in an above-average speed, which causes William Vangeance to think that he has used magic to aid himself.[39]
  • Enhanced Durability: Asta possesses a high durability, as seen when he is able to keep standing up, despite receiving numerous attacks from Heath.[40] He is even able to emerge from Licht's attempted cave-in relatively unharmed alongside Yami.[41]
  • Enhanced Instinct: Asta possesses a heightened level of instinct, as demonstrated when he can unconsciously move his body in the best way to defend himself.[42]
  • Ki: A principle originating from Yami's homeland, this allows Asta to use a sixth sense and to perceive and react to unseen attacks and people.[43]
  • Keen Intellect: Despite his hyperactive and headstrong nature, Asta has shown to be intelligent and thoughtful in his own right. He understands many situations he finds himself in and can be tactical when needed such as cutting out curses with his swords and thinking of different tactics in battle. He is shown to be a fast learner, as he quickly learned to use Ki from Yami's guide in the middle of combat,[44] as well as tapped into the dormant powers of the Demon-Slayer Sword by simply observing its original owner fighting.[45]
  • Devil-Possessed: As a wielder of a five-leaf clover grimoire, Asta is connected to a devil that possesses Anti Magic, which grants him access to the energy. The more power he draws on, the more devil-like his appearance becomes.[46][47][9]

Equipment

  • Grimoire: Asta wields a five-leaf clover grimoire, which he receives during his fight with Revchi. The grimoire is tattered and filthy, a black five-leaf clover insignia at the center of its front cover.[48] This clover symbol is largely unseen due to the dirt covering it, making most (including Asta) assume that the grimoire possesses unusual magic but is otherwise ordinary. His grimoire used to be a four-leaf clover grimoire that belonged to Licht, before being corrupted by Zagred and inhabited by another.[49][50]
  • Anti Magic Swords: Asta is able to summon swords infused with Anti Magic from his grimoire. He uses these swords for various offenses that can nullify magic. The swords can cut through magic, but are reduced to blunt weapons when used to strike anything else.
    • Demon-Slayer Sword: Asta's first sword can be enlarged by extending Anti Magic from the edges of the blade, while the flat side of the sword can be used to deflect spells.[51][52] After six months of training in the Heart Kingdom, Asta has gained the ability to remotely control the Anti Magic within the sword, allowing him to to summon the sword back to himself by holding his hand open and calling its name,[53] as well as ride it through the air.[54]
    • Demon-Dweller Sword: Asta's second sword can release projected slashes of Anti Magic, allowing him to cut through spells from a distance. It can also borrow the magic from the people around him, allowing him to release slashes that possess the properties of other magic attributes.[55][56] Besides Licht, only Asta can wield this sword because he possesses no mana, as other mages would not be able to use any magic while in contact with the sword and would have their mana reserves depleted.[30]
    • Demon-Destroyer Sword: Asta's third sword possess an ability known as Causality Break, which allows it to generate Anti Magic tendrils that can absorb and remove the aftereffects of spells.[57][58] It can even negate Reincarnation Magic.[59][60]

Relationships

Family

Yuno

Yuno is Asta's foster brother, best friend and rival. They grew up together in Hage. Both of them are competing for the title of the Magic Emperor. Asta and Yuno have a mutual respect and acknowledgement for one another. When they cross paths they both comment on each other's improvements and how much stronger they have become. They both act as their key motivators to get better and stronger, always thinking of each other when times get tough.

Asta was the one to inspire Yuno to try and become the Magic Emperor after growing up witnessing Asta's constant determination and defiance despite being born without any magical powers. He feels indebted to Asta pretty easily when he is saved by him on two separate occasions, once in their childhood and again right after they receive their grimoires, as a result, Yuno will save Asta whenever he can, often remarking that they are now even. Yuno was also willing to help Asta when he got into a heated confrontation with members of House Silva, and readies himself with his grimoire should the situation have proven too much for Asta.

Prior to the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony Yuno is somewhat cold towards Asta, having apparently lost faith in Asta's chances to become the Magic Emperor due to his lack of magic and no longer sees him as his rival. However, he reveals that he actually always believed in Asta, when the latter successfully gains his own grimoire and saves them. His commitment to his rivalry with Asta is to such a degree that when Yuno is possessed by an elf Asta's claim that he will become the Magic Emperor is enough to bring Yuno back in control of his body and save Asta.

It is noted by several people how much Asta brightens up Yuno, making him smile and engage in some light-hearted banter as oppose to his cold, stoic, self. Although they make antagonistic remarks to each other they never take it seriously and almost always end their chats reaffirming their commitment to become the Magic Emperor. Asta sees Yuno as a genuinely great Magic Knight and someone he must always measure himself up against and speaks highly of Yuno whenever he is brought up. Asta is comfortable fighting alongside Yuno, and the two become a powerful force in combat when they work together, just about holding their own against the extremely powerful Patolli.

Lily Aquaria

Sister Lily helped raise both Asta and Yuno at the church in Hage. Asta has a deep infatuation with Sister Lily and has repeatedly proposed to her over the years despite her being a member of the church. She rejects him every time and sometimes goes as far as to use her magic to say no. As a child it was Sister Lily who would read the story to Asta about the first Magic Emperor which leads to Asta developing his dream to become the Magic Emperor himself, mostly so he can help everyone at the church live better lives but also to win Sister Lily's love.

Nonetheless, Sister Lily deeply cares for Asta and is the only one who appears to have some belief in Asta succeeding as a mage, but she is still riddled with doubts like most others. This leads her to rejoice at the news that Asta has joined a magic squad and becomes very proud of him upon hearing about his exploits. Asta's dream to marry Sister Lily is second only to his dream to become the Magic Emperor; however, he sees the latter as necessary in order to marry her. He regularly sends off his wages back to Lily and the church, partly to win her affection. He specifically writes to Sister Lily, when he gets the chance, to update her on how he is doing.

Sister Lily often speaks highly of Asta to other members of the church. Saying to Sister Theresa how amazing he is because of his determination to work hard despite not possessing any magical power, and this determination has inspired her to work just as hard, believing that if Asta can do what he can despite not having magic then she has no reason to work any less when she can use magic.

Orsi Orfai

Father Orsi was the man who found both Asta and Yuno on the door step of his church as babies. He noted their contrasting personalities and gave them their respective names and raised them like they were his own children with the help of Sister Lily.

He indulges Asta's brash personality and his dream to become the Magic Emperor but has little expectation for him to succeed and instead expects great things of Yuno, often referring to him as the pride of Hage. However, he does deeply care and love Asta and only seeks to avoid getting his hopes up. He is shocked to see that Asta fails to receive his grimoire at the ceremony, but is left in disbelief when he finds out Asta has received a unique five-leaf clover grimoire and tries to consult Drouot about Asta's grimoire and him taking part in the Magic Knights Entrance Exam despite not having any magic.

Asta leaves with Yuno for the Royal Capital to partake in the exam, he supports their journey but maintains a large amount of pessimism for Asta, reminding him there is no shame in failure and the church will always be his home, however, Sister Lily and some of the other children note that his attitude is because he will miss having Asta around, something he tries to deny. Naturally, he is stunned when he finds out Asta passed the exam and has joined a magic squad, and disingenuously claims he always had faith in the boy. He is very grateful for the money Asta sends back home and is able to use the money to rebuild the church and keep the children well fed everyday. But is comically saddened when he is never mentioned in Asta's letters to Sister Lily.

Asta cares for Father Orsi greatly and respects him as his father, but tends to make amusing comments about the state of the church, which annoys him. He immediately comes to his aid after Father Orsi is poisoned with magic by a possessed member of the Purple Orcas.

Black Bulls

Yami Sukehiro

Yami Sukehiro is Asta's captain and is the one who recruited him into the Black Bull squad after becoming interested in Asta's abilities and determination. Their first encounter was somewhat hostile after Asta accidentally bumps into him, much to Yami's chagrin, and typically lifted Asta by his head to crush it. During the entrance exams Yami speaks to Asta about the ability he showcased, chastising his inability to use magic and unleashed his own magical power to show how powerful a captain is; however, this was mostly a test on Yami's part to see how Asta would respond. When Asta shows he will remain steadfast in his desire to become the Magic Emperor he decides to recruit him into the Black Bull, having taken a shinning to him.

From then on their relationship is pretty much identical to how Yami treats every other member of the Black Bull, with tough love. However, as the series progresses Yami takes on the role of mentor to Asta, teaching him about Ki, giving him advice, reassurance, and at one point fighting alongside him against Patolli and Valtos. Eventually, Yami comes to see Asta as a strong pillar of the Black Bull and being solely responsible for the turnaround of the Black Bull's reputation, having inspired each member of the magic squad to improve themselves. His faith in Asta is extremely high as a result. At the Star Awards Festival, upon hearing the Black Bull have finished second, much to everyone's shock, he grabs Asta, puts on his Black Bull robe for him and throws him onto the stage because he, like everyone else, believes Asta is most deserving of this moment.

Yami showed his caring side with Asta when he decides to try and cheer him up after the Royal Knights Selection Exams by forcing him into the baths, along with the other Black Bull members, and tells him the story of how he first met, and established a rivalry with, William Vangeance, ultimately concluding to Asta that it makes no sense to give up because your rival outdid you one time and instead you should only look to win the next round, this message eventually hitting home for Asta.

Asta is grateful to Yami for giving him the chance to join a magic squad, but he is sometimes put off by Yami's intimidating personality. An example is how often Yami threatens to kill Asta if the latter doesn't listen to him. Regardless, Asta deeply respects Yami as his captain, especially after witnessing his strength and caring side, and is obedient towards him, rarely questioning or arguing with him.

Noelle Silva

Asta first meets Noelle whilst Magna is showing him around the hideout. She initially disliked him because of his low status and his casual, loud, attitude around her; however, after Asta saves her when she loses control of her magic and he immediately compliments how amazing she is, coming after years of torment by her siblings for not being able to control her powers, she befriends him. Although she still maintains a sense of superiority over him, because of her royal status, she enjoys being around Asta, and at one point openly states to him that he is the only commoner she has ever acknowledged.

As the story progresses she develops strong romantic feelings for Asta that first appear on their first mission together that leads them to defend Sosshi from Heath Grice, but is reluctant to express them. This results in her attacking Asta whenever she feels a situation is becoming too romantic between them or when she becomes frustrated if Asta does not notice her. Her feelings have reached a point where she becomes extremely jealous of other girls flirting with him and even goes so far as to follow Asta, Luck and Finral when they go to a mixer to date women. She becomes jealous simply because Mimosa was paired with Asta and performs well with him at the Royal Knights Selection Exam.

She shows great concern for Asta's wellbeing but will try to hide it once she realises he is fine. Noelle panicked greatly when she saw Asta had been impaled by one of Mars's attacks and told Mimosa to leave her so she could heal him instead. When she finds out about Asta's arms she is deeply distressed and goes to great lengths, and ultimately succeeds, to get them fixed. At one point she is jealous of Mimosa because she is taking care of Asta after his match against Langris Vaude and insists to take over after her team's victory. Back at the Black Bull's hideout she is concerned, along with the other members, about Asta's state of mind after the Royal Knights Selection Exam and tries to reassure him whilst protecting him from Luck's usual insistence for a fight.

Noelle thinks very highly of Asta, despite how much of an idiot he is. She sees him as strong, dependable and kind. She often regrets hitting Asta with one of her attacks whenever she gets flustered by him. He is dominantly the reason why she is able to start controlling her magic, often thinking of him, as well as her other friends, to focus her mind. He has impacted her greatly and has inspired her to become stronger and better. She often tries to get his attention, particularly when the squad went to the beach and she donned her bikini that she bought hoping it would attract Asta's attention. She frequently hands Asta a drink whenever he is struggling to swallow his food and offers to feed him when he can't use his arms.

Asta considers Noelle to be a very close friend and goes out of his way to defend her from both physical and verbal attacks, even insulting and fighting the higher nobles for their mistreatment of her. He regularly tries to help her control her magic and has shown unwavering faith in her abilities. His respect for Noelle is great, and at one point, whilst at the Star Awards Festival, he is asked by Kahono what he thinks of Noelle, upon seeing her kindness when helping a child that was lost, and proclaiming to the crowd around her that festivals should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their social standing, he says that he likes her, causing Noelle to become extremely embarrassed and blasts him away. The two tend to spend the most time together at the Black Bull and are on missions together regularly, Noelle has been seeing looking around for Asta, often after she has sent him flying with an attack.

Asta is shown to actually be somewhat aware of her feelings but currently interprets it as deep trusts and believes she's embarrassed about it.

Magna Swing

Magna Swing acts as a sort of sibling to Asta due to them both having outgoing personalities. Asta is often amazed at Magna's "coolness" and was able to impress the fire mage when he deflected one of his most powerful spells on his first day at the Black Bull, and is amazed further when he finds out Asta has no magical power. Magna took it upon himself to show Asta the ropes around the Black Bull's hideout. He also supervised him and Noelle on their first mission where they were tasked with hunting boars. Both him and Asta share amazement and excitement at similar things, such as Magna's broom, going to the beach, seeing the ocean for the first time and fireworks.

Like with so many others, Asta inspires Magna because of his determination to become the Magic Emperor and never giving up in any fight he has been in. This instills a determination in Magna to always keep fighting, just like Asta, and to improve himself for the sake of his friends. When he discovers the situation with Asta's arms he travels, along with Luck, to a dungeon hoping to find a way to fix them, although they failed he is overjoyed to hear his arms have been healed. When he is playing carnival games at the Star Awards Festival he rebuffs the stand owner's insistence for him to go on stage after the Black Bull finished second in the Star Awards, remarking that Asta is the one who should be up there.

Asta believes Magna to be one of the most dependable members in the Black Bull, requesting his aid when he needs to travel somewhere and has the most fun with him. He recognises Magna to be a great combatant and friend. Magna will sometimes help Asta with his strength training by sitting on top of him whilst he does push-ups. He is somewhat competitive with Asta like he is with Luck, as during the Royal Knights Selection Exam he eagerly hunted down Asta to fight him, ultimately losing thanks to Zora's intervention. He is there to catch Asta from falling after he defeats Langris Vaude.

Vanessa Enoteca

Initially, Asta was flustered by Vanessa Enoteca's shameless dress attire and flirtatious attitude towards him but soon became friends with her and respects her greatly. Early on, Asta showed brief signs of attraction towards Vanessa, but reminded himself of his commitment to Sister Lily. Vanessa treats Asta as a sort of little brother, often referring to him as "kiddo". She takes the lead to cheer up Asta after getting eliminated in the Royal Knights Selection Exam and witnessing how far ahead Yuno is, playfully trying to cheer him up.

She deeply cares for Asta and is concerned for his well-being during fights, particularly when he was facing Vetto. After he defeated Vetto she ran up to Asta and hugged him. It was in this fight that Asta's arms were broken and was told he would never be able to use them again, greatly distressing Vanessa. Upon hearing that the source of the problem was a hex put onto him by Vetto she immediately, without hesitation, returned home to the Witches' Forest to make a deal with the Queen to fix his arms, she even went so far as to give up her personal freedom to do so.

Like Noelle, Vanessa gets frustrated by Asta's recklessness in battle and stubbornness, particularly when he was refusing her help because it would cost her freedom. Nonetheless, these personality traits have inspired Vanessa to become stronger for her friends and to do better. She has developed an effective battle tactic with Asta, alongside Finral, which involves slinging Asta around his opponent, using her magic, at great speed whilst he slashes at them, this tactic greatly overwhelmed even Vetto.

It has been somewhat hinted that Vanessa sees a lot of Yami, the man she is in love with, in Asta, because of their defiant attitude against fate.

Nero

An anti-bird, whose original name is Secre Swallowtail, that begins to follow, and somewhat guide Asta since the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. Nero often attacks Asta by pecking him aggressively on his head, but would do so to alert him to something near by or to give him a magical stone. This guidance allowed Asta to find his second sword, the Demon-Dweller Sword.

As they spend more time together Asta has gotten used to Nero and sees the bird as a companion, regularly allowing her to sit on his head, such is their relationship, they are almost never apart.

When Nero reveals her human form she reveals how she felt about Asta. It is shown she first found Asta the moment he attained Licht's grimiore by coincidence. She initially only used Asta for her own goals and found his dream to be foolish as she couldn't imagine Asta being like Lemiel. However, after watching over Asta's growth and accomplishments, she slowly became attached to Asta and started believing in him as she spends more time with him. This trust has made Nero go as far assisting and saving Asta during his battle against Zagred. Even after Nero became human, Asta felt he recognized her and eventually deduced that she and Nero were the same.

Gauche Adlai

Asta's relationship with Gauche Adlai was initially non-existent, since Gauche paid Asta no mind and only cared about his sister Marie. Their interactions boiled down to Gauche expressing his love for his little sister and threatening to kill Asta should he do anything at all with her. This would change, however, after Asta goes to visit Rebecca and befriends her siblings as well as Marie, not realising she was Gauche's sister. Gauche stumbles upon him and Marie and immediately becomes hostile, beating him up and threatening him, but was stopped by his sister.

When the children, including Marie, were kidnapped he reluctantly worked with Asta to get them all back. After saving Marie, Gauche decided to escape with just her since she is the only one he cared about, but was berated by her and was convinced to go back and help Asta, ultimately rationalising that if Asta died Marie would be devastated. Whilst fighting the Eye of the Midnight Sun Gauche is won over by Asta's determination and demand for teamwork.

Since then, Gauche's friendship with Asta has improved. Although he still has great disdain for Asta's friendship with Marie he likes him greatly. This is reflected by his determination to fix Asta's arms when they have a hex put on them, forgoing his usual obsession with his sister to read up on ancient spells instead. It was noted by Gordon that Gauche's frequent nose bleeds are a result of his happiness for others, and normally only occur when he thinks of Marie, but his nose bleeds when he finds out Asta's arms have healed.

Asta finds his obsession with his sister creepy and has comically referred to him as "the bloody nose sister lover", however, he whole heartedly respects Gauche and sees him as a reliable person in battle. Gauche reciprocates this opinion, believing Asta to be a great member of the Black Bull and admires his efforts.

Luck Voltia

Asta met Luck when he first arrived at the Black Bull's hideout. Like with everyone, Luck is insistent for him and Asta to have a death match, throwing Asta off somewhat. Their first mission together was to explore the dungeon, along with Noelle. However, Luck rushes off on his own, leaving Asta and Noelle, to fight a strong opponent he had detected. Eventually, Asta is able to track Luck down and save him from Lotus. However, Luck is insistent that he does not interfere with his fight as he only ever wants to fight alone, but Asta intervenes and saves him once more and tells Luck about the value of teammates and learning to work with others. This makes Luck realise that he does not have to do everything on his own and decides to accept Asta's help.

Luck cares about Asta and was anxiously trying to break free from his binds in order to save him after he had received a serious wound to his stomach fighting Mars. Once he is able to break free he grabs Asta before the dungeon they are in collapses. His care for Asta is further highlighted when Asta's arms are broken and he, along with Magna, travels to a dungeon in hopes of finding a way to fix Asta's arms. His journey ends in failure but is overjoyed to hear that Asta's arms have recovered.

The two value each other as comrades, with Luck regularly requesting to fight Asta as he believes him to be a strong opponent, and Asta seeing Luck as a skilled fighter and a reliable teammate. Although Asta has commented that he finds Luck's constant smiling creepy. Luck also likes to tease Asta, as when they were in the dungeon he intentionally set off traps around Asta and Noelle because he found it funny. He takes great inspiration from Asta and sees him as the pinnacle example of never giving up.

Finral Roulacase

Finral was at the Magic Knights Entrance Exam when Asta accidentally bumps into Yami who almost unleashes his wrath on Asta before Finral's intervention. After Asta is chosen by Yami he teleports him to the Black Bull's hideout and leads the introductions of each member to Asta. He was impressed by Asta's performance in Magna's initiation test as he normally has to save the new recruits.

He decides to take Asta and Luck with him to a mixer to date a few women. Commenting that Asta's personality makes him a shoo-in. At the mixer he tries to break the awkward silence and have Luck and Asta introduce themselves to get the ball rolling. Ultimately, he loses out on his date after Asta causes a riot whilst defending Rebecca. When Finral was about to be killed by his younger brother, Langris, Asta, along with the other members of the Black Bull, rushed to intervene and held Langris at sword point. Asta then fights Langris, in a match sanctioned by Julius, and unleashes his Black Asta form to send Langris flying into his crystal, both winning the match and knocking him out.

Finral uses his magic to save Asta numerous times, such as when he is falling after he had saved Noelle from her own magic, and teleporting him out of the way of Vetto's attacks, furthermore, Finral's teleporting magic has been used by Asta to give himself strategic advantages in fights. Because of this Asta values him as a teammate and is able to form a strategy, along side Vanessa, that has Asta going through Finral's portals whilst traveling at great speeds to avoid any direct hits and to get a surprise attack on his foe. This tactic was able to overwhelm someone as strong as Vetto.

His respect for Asta is great and he was stunned by his determination to keep fighting Vetto despite how powerful he is. This determination ends up inspiring Finral to aid Asta in his fight. Once Asta defeats Vetto he rushes, alongside Vanessa, to give him a hug. Finral is the one to overhear the doctor, Owen, inform Asta that he would never be able to use his arms again after they had been broken in his fight against Vetto, deeply upsetting Finral. He makes the decision to inform the rest of the squad about the situation. His concern for Asta is such that he worked with Noelle to find a way to fix Asta's arms by providing travel for the various squad members to their respective destinations, and went so far as to go to the Witches' Forest to negotiate with the Witch Queen despite his fears.

Comically, Finral attempts to flirt with numerous women throughout the show but often falls short behind an oblivious Asta, such as when Asta's date with Rebecca goes well whereas Finral's ended in disaster, and when he attempted to catch Noelle from falling but Asta beats him to it.

Zora Ideale

At first Asta did not get on well with Zora due to his condescending, sarcastic attitude and lack of seriousness. He was teamed up with him at the Royal Knights Selection Exam and tried to get Zora to work with him and Mimosa but Zora opted to take a nap instead, frustrating Asta. However, Asta starts to have some level of respect for Zora's skills and craftiness in defeating opponents, and appreciates his help that won them their matches, but is still annoyed for his brutal critiques of his opponents and for not telling him about the traps he laid out across the battlefield.

Zora himself finds Asta's brash and loud personality irritable and talks down to him because of it. He cares very little about Asta's qualms with him and chooses to do as he likes. However, he starts to submit to Asta's insistence for teamwork, mostly due to Asta intentionally wrecking his carefully laid out traps and forcing his hand, but also because of his genuine sincerity that reminds him of his father, Zara Ideale. By the end of the Royal Knights Selection Exam, after his team's defeat, he comments to himself that the one area he could have done better is to have relied on his teammates more, begrudgingly accepting that Asta was more capable that he had originally thought. Zora has also shown surprise at Asta's ability to read his Ki and how powerful his Black Asta form is.

Despite their bickering the two have shown to be a deadly duo when working together. Able to outwit Magna, Kirsch, and Langris, as well as Rhya, Lira, Rossa, Fragil and Puli who are all powerful in their own right. Zora is willing to follow Asta's lead despite his constant ridicule of him. For example, when Asta gets him and Mimosa involved in an impromptu match with Langris he laughs with annoyance but ultimately agrees to help out anyway, and again when Asta tells him they should turn back to save Mereoleona when all five elves launch a single attack, which ultimately happens, surprising Zora. Although he would never admit it, he cares somewhat for Asta and is rather distressed when he is captured by Rhya but he reassures Zora that he will be fine, with Zora reminding him that he promised that they would all make it out alive and that he better not die.

Throughout the story Zora constantly throws stink bugs on Asta, much to his amusement, a prank he got from his father. Asta has a habit of complimenting Zora's mask, even when ranting at him. Asta often reminds Zora of his own father, who he held in extremely high regard. It is possibly due to Asta that Zora ultimately decides to start donning his Black Bull robe for the first time. Asta was in disbelief upon discovering that he was a member of the Black Bull, however, he comes to accept it and values Zora greatly for his skills in battle.

Charmy Pappitson

Asta first met Charmy when he first arrived at the Black Bull's hideout. Upon his success at passing Magna's initiation test she gave Asta a piece of pastry. Asta is taken aback by her gluttonous nature, being in awe at how much food she can eat. She has used Asta as a means of travel by hiding in her magic cloud, shrinking it, and placing it inside his robes. She uses this method to go with Asta and Noelle to the War Merits Conferment Ceremony and takes part in the subsequent battle in the capital. It is here that she meets, and develops a crush on, Yuno, Asta's best friend. She later discovers that Asta and Yuno are acquainted.

She cares for Asta and is saddened upon hearing about his broken arms. She decides to venture into a jungle with Grey, hoping to discover some kind of plant that will heal his arms. She comes back covered in fungi due to her eating the mushrooms there and continuing to eat the ones growing on her, to Asta's annoyance. She is ultimately happy, however, that his arms have recovered. She tends to try and be around Asta in hopes of running into Yuno again, as she volunteered to protect Asta when he wants to go to Kiten because she knows Yuno is there. However, when Asta is hurt she decides to go with him to the infirmary instead of watching the final fight of the Royal Knights Selection Exam, where Yuno is participating.

A comical sign of their friendship is Charmy's insistence to feed Asta. She repeatedly offers Asta food as a means to comfort or motivate him. Asta likes Charmy and finds her magic impressive. Although they have rarely fought together he still trusts her abilities, using her magic to help defeat Yagos, and requesting her help to launch him, as well as most of the Black Bull members, over to where Langris is to stop him killing Finral.

Grey

The two met when Asta first arrived at the Black Bull. Unbeknownst at the time to Asta, and the Black Bull members, Grey was not in her true form. Instead, she was in her usual towering male form that only grunts as a way to communicate. Due to this, Asta's relationship with Grey is extremely limited and almost non-existent since he cannot communicate with her. Their first real interaction is when Grey transforms into Asta in order to explain what Magic Knights actually do, and says that she is looking forward to working with him.

During the squad's mission at the Seabed Temple Grey finally reveals her true form to Gauche and Charmy when she runs out of magic power and has since opted to remain in this form despite how excessively shy and embarrassed it makes her feel. Asta, like everyone else, was shocked at Grey's true form being a girl. Their relationship has not developed much since, though, due to Grey's excessive shyness around her squad mates. Nonetheless, she cares deeply for Asta's well-being, complimenting and encouraging him when she can, and thinks highly of him. When she hears about Asta's broken arms, and the source of the problem, she travels with Charmy into a jungle to find a cure, later returning covered in fungi. She is relieved that his arms have gotten better.

Asta's opinion of Grey has rarely been expressed, but at the bare minimum he sees her as a good friend and a valuable member of the Black Bull.

Gordon Agrippa

Gordon was present at the Magic Knights Entrance Exam and saw what Asta was capable of. Once Yami recruits him they all head back to the Black Bull's hideout where Asta is introduced to everyone, including Gordon. The two are rarely seen together because of Gordon's aversion to the sun, and so rarely accompanies the Black Bull on missions, although this does make him sad that he cannot be with his friends.

Gordon's constant mumbling initially creeps Asta out, especially when he has no clue what he is trying to say. In actuality, Gordon is incredibly caring of Asta and constantly mumbles how much he enjoys being around him and the other members, seeing every moment they share as them bonding. He praises Asta and critiques what makes Asta so great to him. At one point, he follows Asta around all day to see what he gets up to and writes it all down in his diary. Such is his love for Asta he believes Yuno is his best friend purely by his association with Asta. He also has made a doll of Asta, as well as the other members of the Black Bull. Gordon's concern for Asta is highlighted when he discovers that his arms are broken and have had a hex put on them and chooses to accompany Gauche to the library and read up on books about ancient spells. He fails and joins Gauche in his insistence for Asta to have a hex put on his arms again so they can be the ones to remedy the problem. Ultimately, however, he is happy that Asta's arms are better.

Asta's relationship with Gordon is strained by the fact that Gordon does not speak at an audible level, making it nearly impossible for him to engage in conversation with any of the Black Bull members. Asta gets comfortable around Gordon, however, and has gotten use to his mumbling. He recognises him as a key member of the Black Bull. He has yet to fight alongside him though, due to Gordon not going out on many missions.

Henry Legolant

Henry first heard about Asta through Yami. The two first met by chance when Asta got lost in the hideout and stumbled into Henry's room. Henry has been a longtime resident in the Black Bull hideout and is the actual owner of the building. Due to his rare condition he cannot be around people who have magic because he will drain it from them, however, Asta is the sole exception due to having no magic at all. The two become friends and begin to hang out with each other without the rest of the squad knowing.

Thanks to Asta's lack of magic Henry has finally made a friend, something he has not had in a long time. Because of this he greatly values Asta and thinks highly of him. Asta is also fond of Henry and enjoys spending time with him, and would clean his room for him.

Other Magic Knights

Julius Novachrono

Julius Novachrono is the current Magic Emperor and, as a result, has Asta's undying affection, who even asks for his autograph. Julius himself has great admiration for Asta because of his unique abilities, piquing Julius's extreme curiosity for all kinds of magic, as well for Asta's personality and his ambition. Julius first encounters Asta when he is disguised as an elderly women when his winnings are robbed. Asta returns the stolen goods to him and Julius immediately becomes interested in Asta's use of anti-magic. He has repeatedly complimented Asta's skills and achievements and holds no prejudice towards him because of his status as a commoner or for not having any magical abilities.

Alongside Yuno, Julius believes Asta is one of the kingdom's up and coming stars and has great potential. He often tries to give solemn advice to Asta and is honest about the reality of becoming the Magic Emperor, emphasising that results are the most important thing, and a good heart is not enough on its own. At one point he is able to save Asta when he is kidnapped by the Eye of the Midnight Sun. It has also been noted by others, particularly Yami, that Julius has taken a special interest in Asta since he regularly requests his presence whenever he invites Yami to the Royal Capital, or hands out special missions specifically to the Black Bull because of his interest in Asta.

Asta was left in awe at the sheer power Julius possessed when he fought off multiple members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. This experience made Asta realise how far off he truly is before he can become the Magic Emperor, but is no less deterred. These feelings are, somewhat, reciprocated, with Julius telling Asta that he is the only person capable of wielding his swords and that not even he is able to read his grimoire. During the Royal Knights Selection Exam, Julius is extremely impressed with Asta's Black Asta form and his Black Hurricane attack.

Mimosa Vermillion

The two first met, whilst both of their respective squads were exploring the same dungeon, when Yuno saves both Asta and Noelle from a trap. Their first encounter was brief and neither acknowledge each other. She witnesses Asta overpower Mars, something that neither of her squad mates were able to do, and is amazed. He is able to save her later when Mars attempts to attack her and Noelle. She attends to Asta's injuries after his fight and is startled he is able to stand up despite his injuries. Unlike most royals, Mimosa holds no prejudice of any kind towards Asta for his status as a commoner, and finds his lack of magic interesting.

Mimosa develops romantic feelings for Asta from their time in the dungeon, something Asta is oblivious to. These feelings have made Mimosa very concerned for Asta's wellbeing, hugging him upon finding out he is okay and wiping his face whilst he eats his food. She tends to think about him from time to time and tries to keep up with his, and the Black Bull's, exploits, and has routinely used her magic to heal him whenever he has been hurt in battle, with Asta being very grateful. Asta considers Mimosa a friend despite being in a different squad and enjoys her company and how much she cares for him. He views her as a strong and competent fighter, and is amazed at her skills.

At the Royal Knights Selection Exam Mimosa has grown stronger and was paired with Asta, as well as Zora, much to her delight. During their first match Asta was impressed by her skill and teamwork on the field, causing her to blush. Mimosa returns the compliment, admiring Asta's skill and how strong he is, commenting that he is amazing. Mimosa is also protective of Asta, as she hoped her brother, Kirsch Vermillion, after having insulted Asta, would win his match so she and Asta could obliterate him. She cared for Asta in the infirmary after his match with Langris Vaude and was very concerned for his dejected mood after he witnesses how far ahead of him Yuno is.

Their interactions have been somewhat limited due to being in separate squads, however, whenever they do cross paths they are very friendly with each other, even though Mimosa blushes and becomes shy around him. Asta has become a motivator for Mimosa as she wants to become stronger so she can one day stand by his side. She is relieved when Asta arrives on the scene to help her after Yuno, Klaus and Hamon are possessed by elves and turn on her. Mimosa could not help but blush when Asta gets her down from the cross she had been suspended from.

Klaus Lunettes

Due to Klaus Lunettes' prejudice of peasants Asta got off to a rough start with him. Their first encounter is in a dungeon immediately after Yuno saves him and Noelle from a trap, with Klaus lamenting this decision by Yuno. They both get into an argument of petty insults before he decides to leave with Yuno and Mimosa. However, after Klaus witnesses Asta defeat Mars, and succeeding where the Golden Dawn had failed, he is left utterly dumbfounded, and is even more dumbfounded when he factors in his lack of magic. He is stunned to see how well developed Asta's body is and realises that his physique gives him a huge boost when fighting on top of his use of anti-magic. By the time they have all escaped from the dungeon his opinion has drastically changed and openly apologises to both Asta and Yuno for his prejudice against them.

From then on Klaus becomes a supportive ally of Asta and will go out of his way to look after him whenever he is badly hurt, he will treat his wounds and change his bandages whilst he is recovering, although he tries to hide his concern. Such is his worry, he comically went out at night multiple times to pray for Asta's arms to get better after they are broken. He can regularly be caught celebrating when he discovers Asta is well and unharmed. He even tries to calm the hostilities developing between Asta and the nobles at the War Merits Conferment Ceremony for Asta's sake. He tries to keep up to date with Asta's exploits and hopes for his continued success. Klaus see's Asta as a fine example of a Magic Knight and seeks to train harder himself, just like Asta would.

Asta, in turn, respects and is grateful to Klaus, and is glad to see him whenever they cross paths. He affectionately calls him "Sir Spectacles", initially to antagonise him but now as playful banter, with Klaus no longer bothered by the nickname. He views Klaus as a formidable combatant and a reliable person, and is happy that Yuno has him by his side. The two have shown to be somewhat competitive with each other, choosing to race each other to the treasure room hidden in the dungeon, and Klaus eager to show Asta how much stronger he had gotten at the Royal Knights Selection Exam.

Fuegoleon Vermillion

Asta views Fuegoleon Vermillion as a quintessential example of what it means to be a Magic Knights Captain, someone who is strong, calm, collected and sincere. As a result, Asta holds him in extremely high regard even though his time with him was brief. He visits Fuegoleon whilst he is still recovering and talks to Leopold about how great he is and that he did not laugh at his dream to become the Magic Emperor and instead considered him a rival.

Fuegoleon took a quick liking to Asta and sought to advise him during the invasion of the capital, explaining to him that he needs to be more calm and focus, and to ultimately think before he attacks. This advice is taken seriously by Asta and he actively seeks to improve his focus during battle. Fuegoleon's first encounter with Asta was when he defended him after tensions were high between Asta and House Silva, almost squaring off against Nozel Silva himself on Asta's behalf. Fuegoleon is one of many people who realise the great potential in Asta, recognising that his fellow captain, Yami, saw something he did not. It's shown that despite the fact Fuegoleon was in a coma upon waking up, Fuegoleon instantly regonize that Asta has grown sustainably and is proud to know that Asta has grown strong.

Despite his brief encounter with Fuegoleon, Asta was angry at what Patolli had done to him, springing a trap on him, taking away his arm and putting him into a coma. This action becomes one of Asta's motivations to bring the Eye of the Midnight Sun to justice.

Leopold Vermillion

Asta first met Leopold Vermillion at the War Merits Conferment Ceremony where Leopold took a quick liking to him because of his bold stance against the nobles there and his combat skills. Leopold has very similar traits to Asta, he is loud, brash and strong headed, and shares the same dream to become the Magic Emperor. Because of this, he declares Asta to be his rival, leaving Asta bewildered. Such is his fixation on Asta, he seared his forehead with a diamond shaped mark, a tradition passed down through the Vermillion family, as a sign of his personal oath to surpass his brother and to beat Asta.

He very much likes Asta and revels in his success, expecting no less from a rival of his and uses Asta as a source of inspiration. Asta also likes Leopold and respects him greatly after fighting along side him during the invasion of the capital. He comments that Leopold is worthy to be his rival and is excited to have him as a challenger. The two are incredibly competitive with each other when the opportunity arises. Leopold is grateful when Asta and Noelle comes to visit his brother, Fuegoleon, who is still recovering from his injuries, and smiles at Asta's compliments and determination to avenge him.

Mereoleona Vermillion

Asta first saw Mereoleona at the Star Awards Festival when she was introduced as the temporary captain of the Crimson Lion, replacing her brother Fuegoleon Vermillion. Soon after he, along with Yuno, catches her berating, but motivating, Leopold and the rest of the Crimson Lion. She decides to have them train at the hot springs. She catches Asta and Yuno and brings them with her to train, and later also brings Yami, Charlotte and Noelle.

At the volcanic region, where the hot springs are located, she challenges everyone there to reach the summit of the volcano. She spots Asta dead last as everyone is using mana skin to handle the intense heat, whereas he has no magic power. She berates him and tells him to go home, insinuating that it has been luck that has gotten him this far. However, this encourages Asta to continue, causing her to smile and tells him to go and climb. Asta uses his Black Asta form to fly to the summit but is not able to control himself and heads straight for Mereoleona who punches him into a rock, stopping him.

She ultimately likes Asta and believes in his potential, encouraging him with tough love and was well aware her words at the volcano would encourage him. When the Royal Knights squad launch their attack on the Eye of the Midnight Sun's hideout she divides the group into five teams, choosing Asta and Zora for herself. When asked why she answers that she respects strength, indirectly recognising Asta's capabilities. She is impressed with Asta's ideals when he explains to Rhya his desire to become the Magic Emperor so he can create a kingdom where people of all race and social status can live peacefully together, causing her to smile. When the tables have turned on the three she decides to save Asta, along with Zora, by throwing them through a hole in the wall and closing it up whilst she fights all five elves on her own. Asta comes back, however, and risks his life to save her, showing his respect and loyalty to his temporary captain.

Asta respects her skills as a fighter and is left in utter disbelief at her raw strength, easily besting Rhya, one of the three strongest members of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. He notes how incredibly difficult it was for him to just defeat Vetto and stop Fana, whilst she makes it look like child's play. He ranks her on par, if not higher, than Fuegoleon. During her fight with Rhya he does his best to take note of her style, hoping to learn something from her.

Sekke Bronzazza

Sekke first met Asta at the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. He notices that Asta has very weak magic power and decides to befriend him, with Asta believing him to be a nice guy. Throughout the exam he tries to coach Asta on how to use his magic power in each test, pretending to be a sincere person. In reality, he was using Asta's poor performance in hopes to make himself look better in front of the captains. Before the final test, involving combat, he partners with Asta, believing he could beat him easily and thereby secure a selection from some of the top Captains. He proceeds to reveal his true colours to Asta, insulting him and leaving him speechless. However, he deeply underestimated Asta's physical prowess and did not realise he could wield anti-magic, because of this, Asta was able to quickly and decisively beat him in one move, shocking everyone.

Although he was still able to get into a Magic Squad, he resented Asta for making him look bad and ruining his chances of getting into one of the elite magic squads. He tries to enact revenge on him when Asta goes to the toilet but is stopped by Yuno. Since then, his relationship with Asta has devolved into comic relief, with Sekke holding disdain for Asta whereas Asta harbours no resentment towards him. He is jealous when he discovers Asta is in a squad, and is friends, with both Noelle and Vanessa. Also, it is possible that Sekke's dislike for Asta is a facade, as when he over dramatically believed he was going to die he begs Asta to fulfil his wish for him, until Vanessa reveals his wound is harmless.

The two are somewhat competitive with each other, with Sekke going out of his way to beat Asta catching a thief who had robbed from an elderly woman, and when they were both working with their respective captains to outsell the food from their stalls during the Star Awards Festival. Sekke is prejudice towards Asta because he is a commoner, and takes the opportunity to denounce him when he is named, along with Yuno, one of the top two rookies of that year, mocking his lack of magic to the crowd. However, he is left with egg on his face when Asta and Yuno demonstrate their respective power.

Asta barely thinks about Sekke and can only remember him as "bah-ha guy" due to his excessive use of "bah-ha", a nickname that catches on with others, much to Sekke's annoyance. Asta does not resent Sekke for how he treated him during the entrance exams and has seemingly forgotten all about it. When Sekke thought he was about to die Asta convinced him to keep on living and not to give up. For the most part, Asta remains oblivious to Sekke's shenanigans against him, not realising he was competing to catch the thief, that he tried to attack him right after the entrance exam, or that he spoke poorly of him to the crowd at the Star Awards Festival.

Rill Boismortier

Asta first met Rill when he was invited by Julius to help dispel the magic inflicting the prisoners that prevents Marx from using his magic to find out who the traitor is. The group gathered there discover that the traitor is Gueldre Poizot, the captain of the Purple Orca, Gueldre decides to flee and uses his magic so that no one can track him. However, Asta knows exactly where he is because of his ability to read Ki and his use of anti-magic means he can stop his magic, thanks to this, Rill is able to trap Gueldre with his art magic. Rill is amazed by Asta's abilities and swarms him with questions, having taken a great interest in him. Before he leaves he bids Asta farewell.

He has taken a quick liking to Asta and grabs onto Asta in distress upon discovering that his magic squad, the Azure Deer, finished last, and the usual last place finishers, the Black Bull, finished second. He then asks Asta how he collected so many stars. Their next encounter is at the Royal Knights Selection Exam where Rill is the only captain who chose to participate in the exam. He arrives with his personal butler, Walter, and greets Asta. Walter immediately eyes Asta and rushes towards him to offer him tea. He explains how Rill views him as a friend and how much that means to him, explaining to Asta that it was unimaginable for some time that Rill would ever make any friends, and is thus very grateful.

Because Rill is so young he acts more childish than all the other captains, making it difficult for him to befriend them, despite his best efforts. It is because of this that he feels more at home with Asta, who he finds much more relatable. Asta, himself, is often flustered by Rill's upfront, exuberant personality, but likes him nonetheless, and considers him to be a friend. He is hurt when he realises that Rill has been possessed by the elf, Lira.

Nozel Silva

Asta's opinion of Nozel is mostly negative as he is aware of how badly he treats Noelle. Beyond that, he does respect Nozel as a captain and recognises his incredible power and skill when it comes to magic. The two have scarcely interacted, but when they have it is apparent they hold some level of animosity towards each other. One such interaction occurred at the War Merits Conferment Ceremony when Nozel joined in with his younger siblings to embarrass Noelle in front of their fellow nobles, causing Asta to become angry and intervene, he proceeds to chastise the three, as well as the other nobles, and end up in a fight with Nozel's brother, Solid.

Nozel views Asta as a worthless commoner and chides his brother for wasting his time fighting someone like him. He then proceeds to unleash his own magical power to confront Asta before Fuegoleon intervenes on the latter's behalf. However, Nozel does acknowledge that there is something interesting about Asta when he was able to successfully land an attack on Patolli without taking a hit himself despite not being able to see what was happening on the battlefield, which indirectly leads to the retreat of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. This comes right after Asta wanted to aid Nozel, as well as Jack and Charlotte, in their fight with Patolli but Nozel rejects him, commenting that someone without magical power would just get in their way.

The two end up in the same squad when Nozel joins the Royal Knights, and it is here that their relationship takes a turn for the better, somewhat. After Asta is injured in his fight with Patolli, along with Yuno, Nozel gives him a rare magical device that greatly accelerates the body's healing capabilities. Asta is grateful for this and comments that he is not that bad of a person after all. It is here that Nozel notes the fact that Asta, who has no magical power, was able to survive a situation that left someone like Mereoleona unconscious. Later on, when Yuno and Asta see that Hage village is under attack, they demand that they go and help the villagers, but Nozel refuses, prioritising the capital first and foremost, but tells the pair they are free to go themselves. Nozel then reveals that he acknowledges Asta's battle prowess, telling him, as well as Yuno, that he is a vital combatant and to be quick in saving the village so he can arrive at the capital to help in its defence.

Despite Nozel's high status and power, Asta is not afraid to joke about his hair style. He even has a serious discussion with Yami, in front of Nozel, about how he braids his hair, causing Nozel to become irritated and threaten to kill them both. Nozel has, on at least one occasion, found Asta's nonchalant comments amusing, as he can be seen smiling when Asta questions the purpose of Clover Kingdom having a king when they already have a Magic Emperor, despite being in the presence of King Augustus Kira Clover XIII.

Rebecca Scarlet

Asta and Rebecca Scarlet first met at a mixer after they were both dragged along by their friends. Everyone else went off on their own dates, leaving both Asta and Rebecca in awkward silence. However, the two become friends quickly after they start talking about their experiences with their siblings. Rebecca's romantic feelings for him is cemented when he throws a drunken man away when he starts to harass her. After they run out of the restaurant and into an alley Rebecca asks Asta if there is anyone special in his life, with Asta answering yes, thinking of Sister Lily, not realising what she was truly wanting to know. However, despite this, Rebecca remains determined to win Asta and invites him to come and visit her and her siblings one day.

Staying true to his word, Asta comes to visit Rebecca and her siblings with all of them taking an immediate liking to him. Whilst she cooks food for everyone each of her siblings tries to goad her into marrying Asta, much to her embarrassment. After Asta returns all the children, including her siblings, back to the town she is extremely grateful to him and, in conjunction with her misunderstanding the nature of Asta and Noelle's relationship, kisses him on the cheek, commenting to herself that she will at least get this much from him. Ultimately accepting she can't win him from Noelle. Typically, Asta remains completely oblivious to Rebecca's romantic feelings for him.

Sally

Asta originally disliked Sally because she is a member of the Eye of the Midnight Sun and has worked to cause him and his friends problems throughout the story. In contrast, Sally has an immense obsession with Asta because of his use of anti-magic. Her giddy, sociopathic, personality peaks whenever she sees Asta and constantly tries to kidnap him so she can experiment on him to satisfy her curiosity, and at one point licks and bites into him.

However, this does make her somewhat protective of Asta, requesting her colleagues to not hurt him or at the very least, not kill him. One time she is successful in kidnapping Asta but is annoyed when she is told she cannot take him to the hideout. After being betrayed by Patolli she decides to switch allegiance and turns to the Black Bull to get revenge, Asta refuses and insist that Sally helps the country instead and offers up his body for her research, with her immediately accepting.

Sally's obsession with Asta persists and she even invokes jealousy from both Noelle and Mimosa when she tells Asta to take better care of his body since she promised it to her. She also wears some of Asta's clothes after allying with them.

Kahono

Kahono first met Asta, along with Noelle, late at night on the beach when the pair overheard her singing. She becomes embarrassed and decides to introduce herself, explaining her dream of becoming a pop star, and finds Asta and Noelle amusing and likeable, deciding to become friends with them. Asta compliments her singing and finds her to be kind and energetic, she even heals his body with her singing after his day of training, with Asta being thankful for doing so.

She bonds with Noelle and decides to work with Asta on helping her control her magic for the next few days. Asta would next encounter her in the Seabed Temple when she, along with Noelle, saved him from Vetto. Later in the fight it is thanks to Kahono that Asta was able to save Noelle from one of Vetto's attacks after she uses what little voice she has left to heal him. Whilst recovering from her injuries she is the first, and seemingly only, person to deduce Noelle's feelings for Asta. Before saying goodbye she initiates the people of the Seabed Temple to serenade Asta and Noelle as a way to say goodbye, and reaffirms her promise that, despite losing her voice, she will continue to try and fulfil her dream.

Asta invites Kahnono, and her brother Kiato, to the Star Awards Festival. Once the two arrive Asta uses the Witch Queen's magic to repair her voice box and Kiato's foot, something she is extremely grateful for. After Magna suggests the idea, she decides to go on a double date with Asta, Kiato and Noelle with the ultimate goal to goad Noelle into confessing her feelings for Asta. She successfully invokes Noelle's jealousy but ultimately fails despite coming close, and states the two will never get together whilst Asta remains oblivious and Noelle remains in-denial.

Kahono greatly appreciates Asta for what he has done for her and speaks up for him, and the Black Bull, after the people around her are suspicious of the legitimacy of the Black Bull finishing second in the Star Awards rankings.

Kiato

The two first meet during the games in the Seabed Temple with Asta being surprised that Kiato knows who he is. They start their match with Kiato revealing his dream of becoming a famous dancer, reminding Asta of Kahono. During the fight Asta is greatly impressed with Kiato's use of dancing to fight, making it extremely difficult for him to read his Ki. Kiato repays the compliment, impressed by Asta's combat skills.

Due to the unexpected attack by Vetto and the Eye of the Midnight Sun the two agree to work together to thwart the invasion, whilst on their way towards Vetto, Kiato explains to Asta about his Butoh Magic that allowed him to nullify Asta's ability to read his Ki. Once arriving on the scene the two fight together against Vetto but are pushed back, with Kiato getting knocked unconscious. Kiato is seen saying farewell to the Black Bulls, and sings with his sister and everyone else to say goodbye.

Along with Kahono, Kiato is invited by Asta to the Star Awards Festival where Asta uses the Witch Queen's magic to reattach his foot that was severed by Vetto. Kiato was extremely grateful and hugged Asta for doing this. He proceeded to dance whilst his sister sings in front of the crowd. He then joins his sister, Noelle and Asta on a double date around the festival hoping to attract Noelle's attention, not realising the date was just a ruse by Kahono for Asta and Noelle.

With his sister he defends Asta and the Black Bull from the suspicion of the crowd about the magic squad's legitimacy in finishing second in the Star Awards, telling them of the great service they provided defending his hometown.

Mars

They originally encountered each other as enemies in the dungeon that Asta, Luck and Noelle, along with Yuno, Klaus and Mimosa, were tasked with exploring. Asta immediately started fighting Mars and initially knocks him out. Mars later regains consciousness and attacks Noelle and sends Asta flying through a wall. Asta returns and is able to use his new sword to remove Mars's flame recovery spell but is impaled in the process. Mars is ultimately defeated by Yuno from a spontaneous attack he had no control over.

Despite being his enemy Asta encourages everyone to try and save Mars as the dungeon begins to collapse, however, they fail to reach him in time and leave. Throughout his fight with Asta, Mars starts to regain his memories but he tries to ignore them. After he was saved by Lotus, after his fight with Asta, the brainwashing that had been done to him has been reversed and he fully remembers who he is and is his childhood friend, Fana.

His next encounter with Asta comes after he leads the Diamond Army's invasion of the Witches' Forest, coincidentally along side the Eye of the Midnight Sun's invasion that is being led by his childhood friend, Fana. He encounters his former teacher, Fanzell, and switches allegiance. The situation about Mars is explained to Asta and he immediately accepts him as an ally and was able to help Mars reconnect with Fana.

Mars is grateful for what Asta has done for him, not only for releasing him from his brainwashing, but for helping him reconnect with Fana, too. The two acknowledge each other as friends and as strong fighters, promising to come to each other's aid should either of them ever need it. He has been inspired by Asta and hopes to change his own kingdom for the better, with the ultimate goal of allying with the Clover Kingdom.

Fanzell Kruger

Asta first meets Fanzell whilst training with his newly found grimoire outside Hage when he sees him being chased by a boar, naked. Asta takes out the boar and gives Fanzell some of his food. The two bond and Fanzell invites Asta back to his house. Whilst there he trains Asta in swordsmanship and tells him his personal situation regarding his fiancée, Dominante Code, and that he has defected from the Diamond Kingdom. Fanzell makes Asta promise him to only use what he teaches him to make his dream come true and to not harm the weak or innocent, with Asta promising him this.

The two grow close and Asta is wiling to go to great lengths to help him, such as saving him from his despair when he believes Dominante had been killed, and proceeding to help him track her down and fight off members of the Diamond Kingdom who are trying to take him back. Fanzell reciprocates these concerns, as he is worried for Asta's safety, actively discouraging him from getting involved and not to die for his sake. He is willing to travel to the Witches' Forest to convince the Witch Queen to fix Asta's arms when they have been broken and a hex is placed on them.

Asta thinks highly of Fanzell's wind magic, being impressed that he could form a sword just by using a stick and wind. In turn, Fanzell ranks Asta's skills highly, commenting that he has trained about a 100 students and Asta would rank in the top two. They share a strong master-student relationship.
